A Quilting Legacy!

The Maple Leaf Quilt Show is now in its 37th year . It is the oldest quilt show in the state of Kansas and the only one of it’s kind. The quilt show is governed by an all volunteer committee that is organized as the Maple Leaf Quilt Show Foundation and is funded entirely by free will donations at the door. We are actively seeking members to serve on the Foundation Committee.

Our Mission is to preserve the historical legacy of the Maple Leaf Quilt Show by continuing the annual presentation of quilts in order to encourage an appreciation for the art form of quilting and to inspire new generations of quilters.

Our Vision is to:

  • Create an environment where traditional and innovative quilt artists will choose to present their works
  • Provide the people of our community the opportunity to view and gain an appreciation for the art form of quilting, experience emotional engagements with quilts and learn about the traditions and history of quilting
  • Demonstrate traditional and/or contemporary quilting techniques
  • Introduce quilters to inspirational ideas through quilt lectures
  • Host workshops where quilters can learn new skills and techniques

The hours of the 2008 quilt show are Saturday, October 18 from 9 am - 5 pm and Sunday October 19, 10 am - 5 pm. We are proud to present a free lecture by our featured guest, Helen Ericson, at 8:00 am Sunday October 19, 2008 in the Music Hall at Baker University. Limited parking for the lecture will be available in the lot behind the Baldwin City Elementary School at 7th and Baker. You may park for free during the lecture but you must move your car by 12:00 noon.

Helen helped quilt show founder Enola Gish establish the first show and participated in more than 13 shows in the ensuing years. She will display a number of quilts in the show and present additional quilts at her Sunday morning lecture entitled “Tell Me About Sun Bonnet Sue” based on history and notes collected by her long time friend Betty Hagerman. She will be present at a table during the show to meet with visitors and will have books and patterns available for purchase including a very limited number of Betty Hagerman’s original book on Sun Bonnet Sue.

We welcome quilts of all techniques, sizes and ages. There is no entry fee. The only requirement is that your quilt has a hanging sleeve.

The theme of this year’s quilt show is “Sun Bonnet Sue”. Attendees will have an opportunity to vote on their favorite quilt in three categories, Favorite Theme Quilt, Favorite Wall Hanging and Favorite Bed Sized Quilt. There will be a cash prize of $50 for each of the Theme and Wall Hanging categories and $100 for the Bed Quilt category.

Quilts for display in the Quilt Show may be brought to Quilter's Paradise quilt shop in downtown Baldwin City anytime during the week of October 13 - 17, 2008 and at the Balwin Elementary School at 8th and Chapel on Friday October 17 between the hours of 4 pm and 6 pm.
